Design Thinking Coaching Workshop: 4-Day Intensive for Creative Problem Solving

Workshop Concept:

The Design Thinking Coaching Workshop is designed as a highly interactive and hands-on experience, spread over 4 days, with each session lasting 2 hours. The workshop guides participants through the full Design Thinking process, helping them master the methodology while actively working on group challenges. Participants will collaborate in small teams, applying each phase of Design Thinking to solve real-world problems.

This format ensures participants not only understand the theory but also gain practical experience by developing and testing solutions through group exercises.

Group Size: Minimum of 2 participants and maximum 4

Schedule: November 11-14, 2024

Daily Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Workshop Objectives:

  • Equip participants with a deep, practical understanding of the Design Thinking process.
  • Encourage collaboration and creative problem-solving through group work and exercises.
  • Provide tools and techniques for generating innovative, user-focused solutions.
  • Empower participants to address real-world challenges in a structured, iterative way.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hands-on experience with each stage of Design Thinking: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.
  • Ability to work effectively in groups to solve complex problems.
  • Practical tools and frameworks for applying Design Thinking in any context.
  • Prototypes and tested solutions that address real-world challenges.

Workshop Structure:

Day 1 (2 hours): Introduction & Empathy

  • Overview of Design Thinking:
Introduction to the methodology, its benefits, and its application in innovation and problem-solving.
  • Empathize Stage:
    • Participants work in pairs or groups to explore the users' needs.
    • Conduct empathy exercises, including interviews, observations, and empathy mapping, to gather insights about the target user or challenge.
    • Group activity: Create Empathy Maps based on insights gathered.

Day 2 (2 hours): Define the Problem

  • Defining the Problem:
    • Synthesize the data from the empathy exercises into a clear problem statement.
    • Collaborate in groups to discuss findings, refine the user needs, and create actionable insights.
    • Group activity: Develop and present a Problem Statement for the challenge.
  • Group Discussion:
    • Each team shares their problem statements, receives feedback, and refines their focus.

Day 3 (2 hours): Ideation & Brainstorming

  • Ideation Stage:
    • Facilitated brainstorming session using methods such as mind mapping, brainwriting, and SCAMPER.
    • Encourage participants to generate a wide range of ideas for solving the problem defined on Day 2.
  • Group Work:
    • Teams work together to generate as many ideas as possible, selecting the most promising solutions for further development.
    • Group activity: Share and evaluate ideas within the team.

Day 4 (2 hours): Prototyping & Testing

  • Prototype Stage:
    • Introduction to rapid prototyping and building simple, low-fidelity models to bring ideas to life.
    • Teams create prototypes of their best ideas using simple tools and materials.
  • Testing Stage:
    • Test the prototypes within the group, gather feedback, and refine the solution based on insights from the testing phase.
    • Group activity: Present final prototypes and discuss how feedback improved the solution.

Workshop Tools & Methods:

  • Empathy Mapping for user insights
  • Brainstorming Techniques (mind mapping, brainwriting)
  • Prototyping Kits (paper, markers, basic crafting materials)
  • Feedback Templates for structured user feedback
  • Real-World Case Studies to apply learned concepts

Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained practical skills in using Design Thinking to address challenges and create user-centered solutions. Each group will have developed and tested a prototype, offering a tangible example of how Design Thinking can be applied in real scenarios.
